Some fittings include a fabric-covered cable designed to be pinned neatly along the wall, which significantly improves the finished look.

A switched socket is strongly recommended. Without one, you'd need to crouch down and pull the plug each time, which is impractical for a bedside light. A double socket with an individual rocker switch per outlet is ideal — it lets you control the wall light independently of anything else plugged in nearby.

For a more permanent feel without full hardwiring, an in-line cable switch (a small rocker fitted partway along the cable) is another option. These are inexpensive and easy to fit without any electrical qualifications.
