An energy-efficient ceiling light converts most of its electricity into light rather than heat, which today effectively means an LED fitting.

An energy-efficient ceiling light is one that turns most of the electricity it draws into visible light rather than wasted heat. In practice that means LED, because a modern LED chip produces around 80–120 lumens per watt, while a halogen bulb manages roughly 15–20. Because ceiling lights often run for more hours per day than lamps or wall fittings, upgrading them delivers the biggest savings on an electricity bill. Look for efficacy figures on the product listing rather than wattage alone: a 12W LED fitting at 100 lm/W will outperform a 15W fitting at 60 lm/W while drawing less power. It is also worth confirming that any fitting you buy meets UK wiring standards, and the Electrical Safety First's Q&A guidance is a sensible reference if you are unsure about installation requirements. How important are IP ratings for bathroom and kitchen ceiling lights?

Bathroom and kitchen ceiling lights need an IP rating matched to their position: IP44 for most zones, IP65 directly above a bath or shower.

IP ratings tell you how well a fitting is sealed against moisture and dust, and they matter most anywhere steam or splashes are present. UK bathroom zones are defined by distance from the bath or shower: Zone 1, directly above the bath or shower up to 2.25 metres, requires at least IP65. Next, check efficacy in lumens per watt — anything above 100 lm/W is excellent, and 80–100 lm/W is still a solid choice. The energy class letter runs from A to G on the new scale, and a class A LED fitting is genuinely among the most efficient available. Colour temperature in kelvins and the colour rendering index (CRI) matter for how the light looks: a CRI of 80 or higher is fine for general rooms, while 90+ is worth seeking out in kitchens and dressing areas where colour accuracy helps. Rated lifespan, usually given in hours, indicates how long the integrated LED should last — 25,000 hours or more is typical for a quality fitting. Beware of listings that quote only wattage equivalents, as these hide the figures that actually determine performance.
