What IP rating do outdoor wall lights need?

Outdoor wall lights need at least IP44 for sheltered positions and IP65 or higher for fully exposed walls subject to direct rain and wind.

The Ingress Protection (IP) rating tells you how well a fitting resists dust and moisture. The first digit covers solid particles; the second covers water. For outdoor use, the second digit is what matters most.

A rating of IP44 means the fitting can handle water splashing from any direction — suitable for a porch, covered entrance, or sheltered side return. IP65 means it is fully dust-tight and protected against low-pressure water jets, making it appropriate for exposed front elevations or gable ends that take the full force of UK rain. IP66 and IP67 go further still, covering powerful jets and temporary submersion respectively, though these are rarely needed for domestic wall lighting.

When browsing wall lights for outdoor use, always check the product specification rather than assuming a fitting labelled "outdoor" meets the rating your position requires. A sheltered porch needs IP44 at minimum; an exposed coastal wall needs IP65 or better.

The zone system used in bathroom regulations maps loosely onto outdoor thinking: the more direct the exposure, the higher the rating you need. If you are unsure whether your position counts as sheltered or exposed, treat it as exposed and specify accordingly — upgrading later means rewiring.

Which materials last longest on an outdoor wall?

Stainless steel, marine-grade aluminium, solid brass, and UV-stabilised polycarbonate are the most durable materials for outdoor wall lights in the UK.

Material choice determines how a fitting weathers over years of rain, frost, and UV exposure. Each material has different strengths.

  • Stainless steel resists corrosion well and suits contemporary schemes, though cheaper grades can show surface rust at the fixings over time.
  • Marine-grade aluminium is lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and takes powder-coat finishes that hold colour without peeling.
  • Solid brass develops a natural patina outdoors and is particularly suited to period properties; lacquered versions slow the patina if you prefer a consistent finish.
  • UV-stabilised polycarbonate diffusers resist yellowing and cracking better than standard acrylic, which becomes brittle after prolonged sun exposure.
  • Cast iron is heavy and traditional but requires a good paint or wax finish to prevent rust forming at joints.

Avoid fittings with untreated mild steel components, standard glass without a protective frame, or chrome finishes not rated for outdoor use — these deteriorate quickly in the UK's wet climate.

For coastal locations, specify fittings explicitly rated for marine environments. Salt air accelerates corrosion on anything less than marine-grade stainless or solid brass, and even sealed fittings can fail at gaskets within two or three seasons if the material grade is wrong.

How do you wire outdoor wall lights safely?

Lumen output, not wattage, is the correct measure of brightness. Wattage only tells you energy consumption; lumens tell you how much light actually reaches the space.

As a practical guide:

  • Porch or entrance canopy: 400–600 lumens per fitting, warm white (2700K–3000K) for a welcoming tone.
  • Side passage or garden path: 600–800 lumens, with fittings spaced every 2–3 metres to avoid dark patches between pools of light.
  • Driveway or large external wall: 800–1,500 lumens, potentially with PIR (passive infrared) sensor control to avoid light pollution and reduce running costs.
  • Security lighting: 1,500 lumens and above, typically on a PIR with a short activation period rather than running continuously.

Colour temperature matters as much as brightness. Warm white (2700K–3000K) suits residential entrances and garden walls; cool white (4000K+) looks clinical in domestic settings and can cause glare on pale render or stone.

Up-down wall lights are an efficient format for outdoor use: they direct light both upward to illuminate the wall face and downward onto the path or step, reducing the number of fittings needed to cover a given area without creating dark zones.
